The Welsh 3000s (aka The 15 Peaks Challenge)

crib2-briefing

Region: Snowdonia (North Wales)

The Challenge: To climb every 3000ft peak in Wales in 24 hours. (We also run this as a 3-day event)

Distance: 48km (30 miles)

Price: From £139 per person

The Welsh 3000's challenge, also known as 'The 15 peaks' or '14 peaks challenge', follows a route across Snowdonia taking in every mountain peak of 3000 feet or more in height.  This is a long and hard route, in total you will ascend nearly 4000 m (13,000ft) in vertical height, but also a very beautiful and rewarding one.  The varied nature of the terrain all adds to the interest; you will encounter not just good paths and grassy slopes but also knife-edge ridges and rocky scrambles as you progress.

Lupine Adventure Co-op run two types of Welsh 3000ers events, the 24 hour challenge and the infinitely more sensible 3 day event.

Some photographs of a previous event are viewable from our Welsh 3000's gallery.

The 24 hour challenge

crib1This is an extremely difficult challenge. It is grueling and fairly unpleasant at times but the sense of achievement at the end and the associated retrospective enjoyment will stay with you for years to come.

The route is split into 3 sections.

1) The Snowdon Range.
To maximise the walking in daylight at the end of the day we start before dawn. We walk to the base of Crib Goch in the half light of pre-dawn and if we're lucky get to watch the sun rise as we scramble up to the first of our peaks. After we have summited Crib Goch and tackled the subsequent knife-edge ridge, some of your leaders will head straight down while the remaining staff will guide you up Snowdon. With Snowdon in the bag you will descend into Nant Peris to meet the van for refreshments . This little lot should take you about 5 hours. It will be about 8 or 9 am. You will have time to refill on snack bars and water.

2) The Glyders
Next you go up and over the Gylders. This grueling section takes in a couple of peaks before getting onto the Glyders and then onto one of the most popular mountains in Snowdonia, Tryfan. You will then descend Tryfan to meet a fresh pair of Mountain Leaders for the final 20km section of the walk.

3) The Carneddau
The final 20 km starts off hard with a 700m climb up from the valley to the summit of Pen Yr Ole Wen and then it is just a case of a long walk along the tops with only short and or gentle ascents and descents. Once you are on the final peak don't celebrate too hard as there is still an hour or two of walking to get off the hill at the end.

The Logistics

We will have a dedicated vehicle on following you around the route for your food, extra water, spare socks and tea and coffee. This vehicle will be there at the end of the event to take you to your car or accommodation. We will be in Llanberis the following morning for anyone wishing to meet for breakfast at Pete's Eats cafe.

castle-in-windsWe staff this event with relatively high staffing ratio's. We do this to enable us to deal with situations such as injuries or slow members of the group without jeopardising the success of the whole team. We staff with ratio's of 1:3 for the ascent of Crib Goch, 1:12 for nipping up the last bit of Snowdon and then 1:6 for all subsequent sections.

The Three Day Event

cantileverThe route we take is the same as the one day challenge but with detours to get to and from the hostels. These detours add a little distance but also avoid some difficult descents.

The hostel accommodation will be for a bed in a shared dorm. If you would like to arrange your own accommodation and catering then please let us know and we'll adjust the price accordingly. The price also includes all food.

“We had a really great time, and it was nice not having the responsibility of route finding or keeping ourselves alive for a change, because you were doing all of that for us! Thanks for keeping us alive and reasonably OK, for being such great company, and especially, for organising such brilliant photography weather! I’m seriously impressed. Still don’t know how you did the shards of sunlight and dawn mist, but thanks!”

Feedback

We were a group of five walkers doing the Welsh 3000s.

We enjoyed the company of the Lupine mountain guides through a fairly tough walk which was made less stressful knowing that we wouldn't lose time with navigation.  They gave us lots of useful advice and help with logistics to get the best out of the (long!) day.

The team went the extra mile to make us comfortable on the mountain and took care of us at each refuelling stop and when unforeseeably our plans had to change the Lupine guys showed their professionalism through being flexible and safe.

All of our team came in together at the end of the day. Without their help this would have been significantly more difficult and less enjoyable.

I would recommend their services and will go back to them in the future.

Challenge Event Feedback

"The booking process was really straightforward. Andy got back to our request really quickly and was able to tailor the challenge to our exact requirements; reducing the cost of the walk considerably meaning more of our fundraising could go towards our appeal!

I am so glad we decided to go with Lupine Adventure rather than trying to take on the challenge alone. Andy and Nick’s knowledge of the route ensured we felt at ease throughout the challenge. Andy and Nick were seen as part of the team, rather than as instructors who were separate from our group. They were fantastic at keeping our moral up throughout the entire challenge, especially at our lowest points and I’m sure we wouldn’t have completed the walk in 10.5 hours without them! If we were ever to take on a similar challenge in the future, I wouldn’t hesitate to contact Andy. "

Coaching for hope

"We just wanted to say we thought Siobhan was absolutely brilliant on Saturday when she got 11 of us up to the Snowdon Summit. We all had such an amazing experience and will never forget it. Siobhan was so encouraging and helpful and there is no way we would have made it without her I'm so glad we booked a guide! We chose to come down a different way which was amazing as we got to see some awesome scenery and to experience two different paths.
We will not hesitate to use you in the future as we are already planning our next trip."

Both Charlie and Trev showed good leadership skills and were very helpful to all members of Team Age UK.

I have no hesitation in recommending Lupine Adventure Co-op and the excellent service they provide, to any other group who are doing a similar challenge event.

"We were a mixed mostly corporate group of 20 who wanted to walk the Welsh 1K. Andy Godfrey (Lead ML) set up a great route and we were joined by ML's Patrick and Richie on the day. Everything about Lupine was professional. Not only did Andy and his team do what they said they were going to do, they made a tough day enjoyable. When difficult decisions had to be made they didn't abrogate to the group leader, they took them finding the right balance. Our group had a fantastic time and will use Lupine again on next years challenge without hesitation. "
